About this journey
This 3 day Uyuni Salt Flats tour combines Bolivia's immense salt landscapes with the remote deserts, lagoons and volcanic scenery of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Flora and Fauna Reserve. Beginning in Uyuni, the journey visits the Train Cemetery and Colchani, where salt continues to be artisanally harvested and processed, before crossing the salar towards Incahuasi Island. The route then heads south through the high desert, spending nights in simple family hostels and experiencing the stark conditions of the Altiplano. Day two takes you deeper into the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, with colourful lakes, volcanoes, desert landscapes and opportunities to observe Andean fauna including flamingos, vicuñas, llamas and alpacas. The final day begins before sunrise at the Sol de Mañana Geysers, followed by a visit to the local thermal waters. The journey continues through the Salvador Dalí Desert, past Laguna Blanca, Laguna Verde and Licancabur Volcano, before returning to Uyuni via Villamar, the Capina borax flat and the colonial church of San Cristobal. The itinerary is rated difficulty level 3 due to high altitude, strong sunlight and significant temperature changes.
About the location
The journey takes place across Bolivia's high altitude Altiplano, beginning with the immense Uyuni Salt Flats and continuing into the remote landscapes of the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve. The Uyuni region combines vast salt plains with small settlements such as Colchani, where traditional salt harvesting and processing remain part of local life. Incahuasi Island rises from the salar as a rocky island covered with large cacti and is also home to endemic bird species and vizcachas. Further south, the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve is characterised by high desert landscapes, coloured lagoons, volcanoes, geysers and Andean fauna. The landscape includes the Siloli Desert, Stone Tree, Ollague Volcano, Laguna Colorada, Laguna Verde and Laguna Blanca.
