About this journey
This 3 day Toro Toro Geo Park itinerary takes you from Cochabamba into one of Bolivia's most distinctive geological and paleontological landscapes. The journey combines hiking, caves, fossils, dinosaur footprints and dramatic rock formations, making it a strong choice for travellers interested in geology, natural history and active exploration. After travelling south from Cochabamba, the first day introduces the geological and paleontological character of the area through the 7 Vueltas hike, where thousands of fossils can be found, including brachiopods, cephalopods and crinoid stems. The second day ventures underground into Umajalanta Cavern, with its stalagmites, stalactites, waterfalls and resident cave wildlife, before continuing to Ciudad Itas. Known as a "city of stones", the area is explored on a challenging 3.5 hour hike through and around its unusual rock formations. The final day combines prehistoric history and natural scenery, with dinosaur footprints at Huayllas Hill, a viewpoint for red fronted macaws and a 2.5 hour walk to the Vergel waterfall, where swimming in the river is possible.
